Enjoy, be tolerant, but call 101 about genuine anti-social behaviour this Halloween

Last year, a total of 398 non-emergency calls were taken by police call handlers between 6pm and midnight on October 31; approximately 17 per cent of those related to Halloween. Now Leicestershire Police is reminding people to call 101 with all police non-emergency issues, including genuine anti-social behaviour in the week of Halloween and Bonfire Night festivities.

Superintendent Jez Cottrill said:

"It is important to state that some children will gather together and go from door-to-door to partake in "trick or treating" in the good spirit of Halloween. If done sensitively, this is not anti-social behaviour. Most will not be offended if a resident displays a sign or message to say they do not wish to take part. Most will also simply leave if politely asked to do so.

"Leicestershire Police is committed to reducing anti-social behaviour in local communities. Incidents that are purely noise related such as fireworks and noise nuisance are normally matters dealt with by Local Authorities.

"However, Leicestershire Police does wish to support residents who do experience genuine problems and officers will offer advice to callers who ring 101 or attend if it is appropriate to do so."

New Inspector at the helm - 5th September 2011

A new inspector has taken command of Rutland local policing unit.

Inspector Kam Mistry (45) takes over from Inspector Johnny Monks (42) on Monday 5th September 2011. Inspector Mistry has had a wide and varied career. He joined Leicestershire Constabulary 18 years ago in 1993 and worked as a PC in Melton for five years before moving into CID at Hamilton where he worked on a number of major enquiries.

In 1999 he was promoted and worked as a Sergeant at Oakham, Belgrave, Hamilton and Melton. He then became Staff Officer to the Assistant Chief Constable and was promoted to Inspector in 2009 working on a number of strategic projects at Force Headquarters.

He became an Operation Command Inspector (OCI) for the Counties’ BCU covering nine local policing areas before taking over at Rutland in September 2011.

Inspector Monks, who is leaving after two and a half years to head the policing at Loughborough, said; “It has been a great privilege to lead the policing team at Rutland and I know Kam will continue the strong partnership working that has led to year on year reductions in crime particularly in burglary and anti-social behaviour. In the last 12 months we have seen a 56% reduction in burglary on top of significant reductions in the two previous years. The number of reports of anti-social behaviour has also dropped from 1,500 a year to 890, a 21% reduction, which is particularly pleasing.

“This has been achieved thanks to strong partnership working with Rutland County Council, the community safety partnership, neighbourhood watch, police volunteers and the great team of police officers who are proud to patrol the streets of Rutland.”

Commenting on his appointment, Inspector Kam Mistry said; “I am really looking forward to the challenge of policing Rutland and meeting the expectations of the community. I am over whelmed and honoured to take this post as it is a privilege to head the police team in the county.

“I am looking forward to getting to know all our local partners and policing the needs of the community. I hope to build on the excellent work delivered under Johnny’s leadership and will continue to deliver high quality policing I want to be approachable and accessible to local people and ensure good police visibility in Rutland to give community reassurance.”
